Mother Hospitalized with Lung Abscess After Aspirator Use
The lung abscess grew to six centimeters before responding to antibiotics.
A young mother from Pervouralsk (in the Urals), Oksana Stakheeva, was hospitalized with a lung abscess. According to the patient, the infection entered her lungs after she used a nasal aspirator to remove her child«s mucus. Oksana»s treatment was limited to a course of antibiotics, but often patients require surgery to save their lives.
Oksana detailed in her blog how she ended up in the hospital.
«This is the story of how I ended up in the hospital after sucking out my child»s boogers. On July 7, I was hospitalized with a diagnosis of an abscess in my right lung. What is an abscess? An abscess — it is a limited purulent-necrotic cavity in the lung tissue. So I had pus accumulated in my lung. I had a million questions: how, why, where from? I didn«t hit myself, I didn»t catch a cold, I didn«t have any prolonged illnesses.
«I was admitted to the hospital, and they put me on various antibiotics for 10 days. My cavity grew to six centimeters, and I was sure they would remove it surgically. But fortunately, there was no surgery, and the pus resolved thanks to the antibiotics, and now I am continuing treatment,» Oksana noted in her blog.
The young mother also said that doctors do not recommend using a nasal aspirator.
«When the doctor and I began to discuss how I could have contracted a lung abscess, I remembered that literally two weeks before I was hospitalized, I was clearing my child»s mucus with a regular nasal aspirator. Not an electric one, not a syringe, but the most ordinary one. When I told the doctor about it, I heard that this method of removing mucus always carries very dangerous consequences. Because the child may be sick with something, but for him it is not as dangerous as for the parent who inhaled it. The doctor gave me an example of a patient, a father, who also cleared his child«s mucus, and they brought him back from the brink because he caught a very rare infection. And a lung abscess occurs when an infection enters most often through aspiration,» the blogger noted.
Oksana warned other parents and advised against using such devices.
