“Mercury lamps are class G medical waste — toxicologically hazardous waste, similar in composition to industrial waste. These wastes should by no means end up in container sites for municipal solid waste, and certainly not be lying around in the snow near them — this is a violation of legal requirements. Such lamps must be collected in marked containers with lids and stored in special rooms for medical waste storage,” the environmentalist reported.
The Ministry of Health informed the 29.RU editorial office that there are several independent organizations and tenants on the territory of the hospital complex of the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of Arkhangelsk Region «Arkhangelsk Regional Clinical Hospital» (GBUZ AO AOKB).
“All of them are obligated to independently organize, in strict accordance with Russian Federation legislation, the accounting, collection, temporary storage, and transfer to specialized enterprises of all generated waste, including class G medical waste and mercury-containing lamps.”
An inspection is currently being conducted at the hospital.
“The identified fact has been taken under special control by the hospital administration. Regarding this incident, an internal investigation and official inspection have been immediately initiated to: establish the source of the waste«s origin (AOKB department or another organization); identify the persons responsible for the violation that occurred; take exhaustive measures to prevent similar situations in the future.”
Earlier we reported that an inspection was carried out at an enterprise engaged in the disposal of class «B» medical waste in Arkhangelsk. Violations were found in its operation.
