Chelyabinsk Clinic Introduces Dual-View Dental Microscope

Bright light directly in the eyes, the doctor leaning in close to your face, brief remarks through a mask: «Lyuda, hand me the probe… Not that one.» The clinking of instruments, tense pauses, and attempts to guess what«s happening in your mouth. When you»re sitting in the dental chair, you least want to experience additional stress, even if the treatment is planned and seemingly straightforward.
At the appointment with dentist-therapist Valeria Snedkova, everything is different. The doctor and assistant understand each other intuitively, and patients are so calm and relaxed that they sometimes even fall asleep during procedures. How is such an atmosphere created and what role does the new-generation operational microscope play? We learned from the source.
— Valeria Vladimirovna, the clinic City Smile has acquired an operational microscope with an assistant binocular tube. How much does it simplify the work?
— It«s important to understand that the microscope itself doesn»t do anything for the doctor (smiles). It doesn«t replace experience, knowledge, or manual skills. It»s a working tool that allows for more precise and high-quality treatment.
The first and most obvious point for patients is, of course, magnification. The optics help us act more targeted and fully control the process. This is especially true for root canal treatment, and even more so for retreatment.
For example, in treating cavities, magnification allows us to remove less healthy tooth tissue while maximally accurately removing the affected areas. And in restoration — to restore the tooth so that it looks as natural as possible, with precise fitting to the tissues and clear boundaries. Without magnification, it«s simply impossible to do this so neatly.
— And the second point?
— The doctor«s posture. With the microscope, we sit in a comfortable, physiologically correct position. Muscles are relaxed, nothing is strained or painful, and this increases concentration. Usually, a doctor is forced to constantly bend over, tense the neck and back, and by the end of the shift, fatigue accumulates — requiring additional effort to stay focused.
— Dentists are increasingly using microscopes in their practice, but usually the device is designed for one doctor. What«s special about your setup?
— Here, the assistant has their own eyepieces, direct view through the optics: they are fully involved in the work and see everything the same as the doctor. Thanks to the microscope, the assistant can also work sitting down, no need to stand behind the chair for hours. This greatly reduces fatigue and increases engagement in the process.
— How important is team synergy here?
— I have a permanent assistant, and we already understand each other well. We work literally in perfect tandem, in the ideal scenario I might not say a word to her the entire appointment. She understands what«s happening, knows the protocols, sees each stage of treatment, and prepares the needed instrument in advance. Everything happens in seconds, and as a doctor, I can fully concentrate on the treatment.
— Does the patient feel the benefits of such team work?
— Yes, first, there are fewer conversations. The patient doesn«t hear the names of instruments or discussions that might worry them. Second, thanks to the use of the microscope, there is distance — we don»t lean in close to the face, we work through optics.
— Are such «dual» microscopes for doctor and assistant still rare in Chelyabinsk?
— In our city, it«s currently the only one, and even in the country, not many clinics use it. The device is expensive, complex, you can»t just buy it, set it up, and start working. Each microscope is adjusted for a specific doctor: individual parameters, arm length, neck, posture are considered. Only then does it truly provide all these effects.
— How do you decide in which situations the microscope is necessary and when you can do without it?
— Currently, all my treatments, even the simplest, are done with magnification. Because the main advantage here is concentration of attention, which largely determines the success of treatment. When the doctor sees more, tires less, and is fully focused on the process, it always reflects on the result. For the patient, it«s confidence that everything will be done as attentively, accurately, and qualitatively as possible.
