Numerous injury cases have been recorded at the Volzhsky psycho-neurological care home, which gained notoriety after the death of a resident. According to official statistics, in 2025, 20 out of 71 residents in the intensive care unit sustained injuries.

The Volgograd Region prosecutor«s office cites different figures: over 10.5 months in 2025, 26 people are listed as injured. This is six more than the social protection committee»s data for the entire year. The agencies explain the discrepancy in counts by different methodologies: the prosecutor«s office considers statistics for the entire care home, while the committee only for one unit.

According to the prosecutor«s office, 17 of these 26 residents were injured between 26 June and 17 October 2025, i.e., in less than three months.

The Regional Social Protection Committee noted that the statistics include even minor injuries. Each case is recorded according to regulations: it is reported to law enforcement, and the injured person is sent for examination at a hospital.

«It is important to note that in 2025, there were no injuries requiring hospitalization for further treatment. The cited statistics include all types of injuries, including minor ones, which residents may sustain while attempting to move independently. Each case is individually reviewed by staff of the specialized institutions. Elderly residents of the intensive care unit (where citizens needing constant care, limited or completely immobile with complex comorbidities are placed) of the Volzhsky PNI (currently the Volzhsky Social Service Home) due to age and health status belong to a high-risk group for possible falls and injuries; also, some recipients are recognized as needing palliative medical care, requiring constant external care and medication support.»

Previously, the daughter of the deceased pensioner, Ksenia Yupatova, accused the care home staff of negligence that could have led to her mother«s death. A former employee also reported frequent patient injuries and the difficult situation at the institution. The prosecutor»s office cited possible causes of the incidents as overtime work and a severe staff shortage.
