During check-ups from January to June 2026, medical workers in Udmurtia (a republic in Russia) discovered over 23,000 new diseases. Among them, malignant tumors were confirmed in 454 people. In 313 cases, the disease was detected at an early stage when therapy is most effective. However, advanced forms also occurred.

For instance, a 60-year-old man who had never undergone preventive check-ups was invited by doctors from a polyclinic in Izhevsk. Fluorography showed a mass in his lungs. He had a 40-year smoking history and significant weight loss over the past year. After additional examinations and consultations with oncologists, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

«Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Lung cancer is one of the most common oncological diagnoses in our country. Its insidiousness lies in the fact that in the early stages it can be asymptomatic. And it is precisely when treatment is most effective that a person feels completely healthy and sees no reason to see a doctor. Check-ups are carried out precisely to find diseases before they declare themselves globally. This is a simple, fast and free way to check your body,» emphasized Minister of Health of Udmurtia Sergei Bagin.

All Russians can regularly check their health thanks to the national project «Long and Active Life», implemented by decree of President Vladimir Putin. In the first six months of 2026, more than 310,000 people in the republic underwent check-ups and preventive examinations. In addition to oncology, doctors identified over 7,000 cases of cardiovascular diseases and about 930 cases of diabetes mellitus.
