The Kalachevsky District Court has begun hearing a criminal case against the senior mate of the tug boat «Heroes of the Arctic». He is accused of violating safety rules for navigation and operation of inland water transport, which led to the collision of two vessel convoys.
The accident occurred in autumn 2024 near the village of Pyatiizbyanka in the Kalachevsky district. According to investigators, the tanker «Dorida» collided with a convoy consisting of the tug «Heroes of the Arctic», the tanker «Olivia», and the tug MB-1216.
The accused, while navigating through the Tsimlyansk Reservoir, noticed a maneuvering combination of other vessels crossing his course but took no measures to prevent the impact. The Southern Transport Prosecutor«s Office clarified: »The total damage caused to the shipowners amounted to more than 4 million rubles (over $44,400 at current rates).«
The defendant is senior mate Alexander Cherkasov. The first hearing on the merits of the case is scheduled for July 23.
