Preventing Child Drownings: EMERCOM and Ombudsman Team Up
During summer holidays, children spend a lot of time outdoors, including near water bodies. However, water poses a serious danger, especially if there are no adults nearby or basic rules are not followed. To prevent tragedies, EMERCOM employees together with government and public representatives conduct regular preventive measures.
The latest raid involved inspectors from GIMS (State Inspectorate for Small Vessels) of EMERCOM and the Commissioner for Children«s Rights in the Ulyanovsk Region, Olga Ivanova. They held explanatory conversations with vacationers, paying special attention to parents and children. The inspectors reminded about the ban on swimming in unapproved places, the need for constant supervision near water, and explained how to act in an emergency and provide first aid. Everyone was given leaflets with basic rules and emergency numbers.
Olga Ivanova emphasized the importance of systematic work: «Prevention is not just informing, but a real measure to prevent tragedies. Joint raids allow us to convey key safety rules to the maximum number of residents of the region and draw adults» attention to personal responsibility for the safety of children. Such measures help increase awareness and reduce risks. Only through joint efforts can we protect children from disaster!«
The Main Directorate of EMERCOM of Russia for the Ulyanovsk Region urges parents and children to strictly follow safety rules:
- Swim only at officially equipped beaches.
- Do not leave children near water unattended, even in shallow water.
- Teach your child to swim and explain that they should not swim far out.
- Do not allow children to dive in unfamiliar places: the bottom may have snags, rocks, and debris.
- Do not use inflatable devices in windy weather.
- Learn emergency numbers with your child: 101 (fire), 112 (unified rescue service).
