In a forest ten kilometers from the village of Nizevo (Kirov Oblast, Russia) in the Falensky District, a gamekeeper discovered the remains of a female moose covered with snow and bearing traces of gunshot wounds. The find was reported to the police, as hunting for moose is currently prohibited. Investigators established that a local resident born in 1988 was involved in the illegal shooting. The man voluntarily confessed, stating that he understood the illegality of his actions.

He used his own registered smoothbore shotgun to commit the crime. The damage to the region«s natural resources was estimated at 400,000 rubles (about $4,400 at current rates). Police opened a criminal case under Article 258 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, »Illegal Hunting.« The sanctions of this article provide for punishment of up to two years in prison.
