No 'Progress': Don city sells off stadiums

Two long-abandoned stadiums in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, a city in Russia's Rostov region, are being auctioned, with one site potentially redeveloped for housing.

Two formerly functioning stadiums in the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky will be auctioned off. At least one of the sites could eventually be developed into residential housing.
The first former stadium is located within Mayakovsky Park in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky.

The first site is located in the western part of the city«s Mayakovsky Park of Culture. On Yandex Maps, it is marked as the stadium of the Kamensk Technological Institute (a branch of Platov South-Russian State Polytechnic University, YURGPU).
Russian Railways is auctioning the Progress stadium in Likhovsky district.

«The surrounding area is mainly a forest-park zone of municipal significance. The property is a complex of a former sports stadium. Public transport stops are 900 meters away,» the lot information on the website of state company DOM.RF states.
The total plot area is 2.75 hectares. It contains a small building (143 square meters) and a structure covering 2,400 square meters.
The auction is scheduled for Q2 2026.
The second stadium is named «Progress» and is located near Victory Park in the Likhovsky microdistrict of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. The seller is Russian Railways (RZD). The plot area is 41,300 square meters.
«The plot is suitable for residential, business, or commercial development. Within walking distance are a school, a clinic, and a railway technical college,» the announcement states.
The auction is scheduled for 26 February, with a starting price of 5.4 million rubles (approximately $60,000 at current rates).
Kamensk-Shakhtinsky also has another Progress stadium. It was built in the city center in the middle of the last century and is considered the main city stadium. Therefore, its fate is different. For a long time, this Progress was also in a poor condition, but in 2025, 42 million rubles (approximately $466,700 at current rates) were allocated for its reconstruction. The work is planned to be completed by 2027.
