Nizhny Novgorod Braces for Severe Frosts Down to -29°C

A sharp cold snap is expected in Nizhny Novgorod from the middle of the current week. According to data from the Federal State Budgetary Institution «Upper Volga Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring» (UVDGMS), after relatively warm weather the mercury will begin to drop rapidly on Wednesday, 21 January.
Weather conditions will change as follows:
- On Tuesday, 20 January: temperature around -4°C (25°F).
- On Wednesday daytime: -7°C (19°F), cooling to -15°C (5°F) overnight into Thursday.
- By Friday the frost will intensify: overnight to -26°C (-15°F), during the day to -22°C (-8°F).
The upcoming weekend will be the coldest. The air will cool to -29°C (-20°F) overnight from Friday to Saturday. Forecasters predict -20°C (-4°F) during the day on Saturday. A slight warming to -25°C (-13°F) at night and -17°C (1°F) during the day is expected only on Sunday.
Snow is possible throughout the work week in the city, stopping by Saturday and Sunday. Meteorologists previously reported that February in the region, according to a preliminary forecast, is expected to be about one degree above long-term average values with precipitation above the norm.
