Nikitin: Nuclear Energy Will Be in Nizhny Novgorod

The construction of a nuclear power plant in the Nizhny Novgorod region is approaching reality. The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation approved the inclusion of the facility in the general scheme for 2027, as Governor Gleb Nikitin reported on his social media page.

Nikitin stressed that the construction of the plant will require a long time. It is expected to be commissioned only in the late 2030s – early 2040s. The region is counting on significant development opportunities after the emergence of such an important facility.

The head of the region also mentioned the unsuccessful experience with the Gorky Nuclear Power Plant, the construction of which was abandoned in the late 20th century at the final stage. Now, only bricks and an abandoned administrative building remain from the eight-story giant. Nikitin called the refusal to complete it a serious mistake.

In his post, the governor wrote: «Unfortunately, political conjuncture and the exploitation of people»s fears after the Chernobyl accident then prevailed over common sense and the objective interests of the region. ... Well, we will make every effort to more than correct this mistake. I am sure that nuclear energy will be in the Nizhny Novgorod region!«

A working group for the construction of the NPP is already active in the region. It has identified possible sites: Vyksa, the village of Krasnye Baki, and the coast of the Gorky Reservoir in the Sokolsky district.
