Moscow Court to Consider Appeal Against Volgograd Official's Arrest

The Moscow City Court will hear the defense«s appeal on the decision to arrest Daria Kazankova, head of the legal department of the Volgograd administration, on January 21. The official was detained in mid-December last year along with the former chairman of the regional committee for natural resources, forestry, and ecology.
Reports of Kazankova«s detention first appeared on December 17 in the Telegram channel »Volgograd Rumors.« The channel»s authors linked this event to the visit of Russian General Prosecutor«s Office employees to the region.
According to people who know Kazankova well, she never gave the impression of someone prone to adventures or corruption schemes. A strict lawyer, a pedant, whose documents were always in perfect order. That«s why the detention came as a surprise even to those who have long observed the backroom life of the city hall, the authors report. According to one version, the case may be related to the ongoing inspection by the General Prosecutor»s Office. Entrepreneurs and other interested parties, in communication with high-ranking employees of the supervisory agency, began actively sharing information — inspections on these facts are in full swing.
On December 18, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow chose detention as a preventive measure for Daria Kazankova. On the same day, the following were arrested:
- Chairman of the regional committee for natural resources Alexei Sivokoz;
- His former deputy Irina Panina.
The investigation also secured the classification of information on these criminal cases.
On December 23, it became known that all three detainees appealed the preventive measure. However, on the portal of the Moscow City Court, a specific date for consideration has so far been set only for Daria Kazankova«s appeal.
