Gleb Nikitin Promises Nuclear Power Plant for Nizhny Novgorod
Nizhny Novgorod Oblast has secured backing from the Russian Ministry of Energy for a nuclear power plant to be included in the national energy scheme by 2027, Governor Gleb Nikitin said.

The prospects of building a nuclear power plant in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast are becoming increasingly real. The region has already received support from the Russian Ministry of Energy for inclusion of the NPP in the general layout of electric power facilities in 2027, Governor Gleb Nikitin announced on his social media page.
According to the head of the region, building its own NPP is not a quick process. It is tentatively expected to be commissioned only by the late 2030s — early 2040s. With such an important facility, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast will gain enormous development opportunities, Nikitin noted.
He also commented on the region«s unsuccessful experience with building a nuclear power plant at the end of the 20th century. The project was abandoned at the final stage of readiness: today, only bricks and an abandoned administrative building with artifacts of a bygone era remain from the eight-story giant. The refusal to complete the Gorky NPP, in the governor»s opinion, was a big mistake.
«Unfortunately, the political climate and exploitation of people»s fears after the Chernobyl accident prevailed over common sense and the objective interests of the region. ... Well, we will do our best to more than make up for this mistake. I am sure that nuclear power will prevail in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast!« wrote Gleb Nikitin.
It should be added that a working group on the construction of a nuclear power plant has already been established in the region. It has even identified approximate locations where the NPP could be situated. Among them are Vyksa, the settlement of Krasnye Baki, and the Gorky Reservoir on the side of the Sokolsky District.
