In the Tambov Region over the past weekend, July 18 and 19, five road traffic accidents occurred. As a result, one person died and nine sustained injuries of varying severity, including a minor passenger of a car. The accidents were recorded in the regional center and in the Tambov Municipal District. Types of accidents included two collisions, a rollover, a run-off-road, and a pedestrian strike. Officers of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate (DPS) removed 22 drunk drivers and 28 unlicensed individuals from the road.
On July 19 at 3:30 a.m., on the 19th kilometer of the Tambov–Shatsk highway (Tambov Municipal District), the driver of a Chevrolet Epica (born in 2007, licensed less than a year ago) drove into the oncoming lane (where entering the oncoming lane is prohibited). He collided with a VAZ 2110 driven by a man born in 1984. The VAZ driver died at the scene. Three of his passengers — a 15-year-old teenager, a 19-year-old girl, and a woman born in 1986 — were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The Chevrolet driver later sought medical attention on his own. For driving into the oncoming lane in violation of traffic regulations, punishment is provided under Part 4 of Article 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (CAO RF): a fine of 7,500 rubles ($83 at current rates) or license suspension for 4–6 months. A repeat violation carries a one-year suspension, and if recorded automatically, a fine of 7,500 rubles ($83).
On July 19 at 5:47 p.m., near building No. 23 on Chicherina Street in Tambov, the driver of a KUGOO electric bicycle (a man born in 1994) ran a red light and struck a pedestrian — a woman born in 1969 who was crossing the road at a controlled crosswalk on a green light. Both participants were injured and hospitalized.
On July 17 at 8:15 p.m., on the 56th kilometer of the Tambov–Penza highway (Rasskazovsky Municipal District), an accident occurred involving a passenger car and a truck. The driver of a BMW X5, a 44-year-old resident of Voronezh, drove into the oncoming lane (where it is not prohibited) and collided with a SITRAK C7H truck with a refrigerated semi-trailer, driven by a driver born in 1970. The truck sustained significant damage. The BMW driver, his wife, and two children (ages 9 and 13) died at the scene. The truck driver was injured. According to preliminary data, one of the causes was excessive speed: over the past year, the BMW driver had been cited more than 30 times for speeding (Article 12.9 of the CAO RF). A criminal case has been opened into the accident.
