First laparoscopic triple hernia repair in Bashkortostan

At Kiginskaya Central District Hospital, located in the Republic of Bashkortostan, laparoscopic repair of anterior abdominal wall hernias was successfully performed for the first time. Such a complex intervention became possible thanks to the arrival of modern equipment in the surgical department as part of the national project «Long and Active Life».

During the high-tech intervention, performed through three small punctures (up to 1 cm each), surgeons managed to simultaneously eliminate inguinal hernias on the right and left sides, as well as a previously undiagnosed femoral hernia on the left, which was discovered only during revision of the abdominal cavity. The defects were closed using a mesh endoprosthesis.

Laparoscopic hernioplasties have been performed at the hospital for over a year thanks to new equipment received under the national project. During this time, doctors have successfully introduced the technique, performing more than 70 laparoscopic operations of various types — from gallbladder and appendix removal to repair of hernias of different locations. To date, the number of interventions indicates stable mastery of the technology.

This case was the first in the institution«s practice where three hernia defects were eliminated laparoscopically, simultaneously, through three punctures. Previously, such combined interventions had not been performed.

The accumulated experience in performing laparoscopic operations allowed the doctors to confidently carry out the intervention on three hernias simultaneously, which required high precision and coordinated work of the surgical team.

Chief physician of Kiginskaya Central District Hospital Denis Shafikov commented on the success: «We have been performing surgical interventions for the treatment of anterior abdominal wall hernias for more than one year, and during this time we have successfully performed more than 20 such operations. In this case, we not only coped with the planned scope but also identified an additional defect, eliminating it without increasing trauma. Thanks to the experience in performing such operations, we were able to successfully carry out this complex intervention — eliminating three abdominal hernias at once through three punctures.»

Key advantages of the laparoscopic technique are minimal tissue trauma, reduced blood loss, and rapid recovery. As noted at the hospital, patients return to full life within 2–3 weeks after discharge. Hospitalization times with laparoscopy are reduced compared to open operations.

The national project «Long and Active Life» aims to increase the life expectancy of citizens, develop prevention, and introduce innovative treatment methods. The arrival of modern equipment in rural hospitals is part of this strategy.
