The mourning events began with a memorial service and the laying of flowers and wreaths at the «Leningrad Children» grave in the civil cemetery. Then a rally was held on the station square at the monument to children who died during the Great Patriotic War.
In his speech, Chursinov emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of the tragedy that claimed the lives of more than two thousand children evacuated from Leningrad in July 1941. Notably, the annual events in Lychkovo are timed to the events of July 18, 1941. On that day, Nazi aircraft attacked a train with evacuated children, killing more than two thousand young lives. For a long time, this tragedy remained little-known. Thanks to the efforts of local residents and the «Leningrad Children» campaign, the memory has been immortalized: a monument has been erected on the site, and the grave has become a place of mourning and reverence.
