227 Drunk Drivers Detained in Southern Urals

Over the past week, State Traffic Safety Inspectorate (GIBDD) officers in the Chelyabinsk Region recorded 227 cases of drunk driving.

198 violators were brought to administrative responsibility for drunk driving or refusing a medical examination. By court decision, they face license suspension for 1.5 to 2 years and a fine of 45,000 rubles (about $500 at current rates).

Criminal cases were opened against 29 drivers detained repeatedly for drunk driving under Article 264.1 of the Russian Criminal Code. The maximum penalty under this article is up to three years in prison, as well as possible confiscation of the vehicle.

To improve road safety in the region, preventive work has been stepped up. Additional patrol crews from the regional traffic police regiment have been involved. In Miass (Chelyabinsk Region), in the first half of 2026, 191 drivers were punished for drunk driving, and 9 cases of repeated offenses led to criminal proceedings.

The State Traffic Safety Inspectorate emphasizes: «Driving under the influence poses a direct threat to the life and health of all road users. Alcohol significantly reduces a driver’s ability to adequately assess the situation and respond to changes in a timely manner — even a minor mistake can lead to tragic consequences.»

Road police urge residents of the Southern Urals to be responsible: «If you drink alcohol, you should refrain from driving and use taxis, public transport, or seek help from relatives.»
