Woman shows Chukotka prices: cucumbers 1200, sausage 1800

A woman from Tyumen showed the prices at which groceries are sold in the Far East. She sent photos from a store located in the town of Bilibino in Chukotka.

«Salaries for locals, not shift workers, are very low — about 80,000 rubles ($890 at current rates). But indigenous peoples have licenses for whaling and seasonal fishing. Overall, life is completely different from that on the »mainland.« That»s what they say because of the remoteness and isolation from the rest of the country,« the woman said.

Sausage in the store is sold for 1,700–1,800 rubles ($19–$20 at current rates). There is a cheaper option at 860 rubles ($10 at current rates). Creamy processed cheese costs 430 rubles ($5 at current rates). For a larger volume, it is 830 rubles ($9 at current rates).

Sour cream costs 500 rubles ($6 at current rates), 2% cottage cheese is 400 rubles ($4 at current rates). Cottage cheese with 5% fat is 10 rubles more expensive, at 410 rubles ($5 at current rates).

Fruits and vegetables are also expensive compared to prices in other regions. Apples cost 1,200 rubles ($13 at current rates) per kilogram, red onions 1,000 rubles ($11 at current rates).

Sweets are also not cheap. Chocolate bars are sold for 160 rubles ($2 at current rates) and 240 rubles ($3 at current rates). Candies vary in price — some for 800 rubles ($9 at current rates), others for 1,500 rubles ($17 at current rates).

A small pack of tea is sold for 200 rubles ($2 at current rates). There is also a more expensive one at 250 rubles ($3 at current rates).
