State Duma to Review Law for Nearly a Million Cod Liver Cans Annually

The State Duma will soon consider a bill that should increase the production of cod liver preserves. The initiative came from Murmansk Region and has already been included in the parliament«s work plan for the spring session.

The draft law was prepared by senators at the request of regional authorities and fishermen. The document was previously submitted to the State Duma but was withdrawn due to technical and linguistic remarks. Now the bill has been refined jointly with deputies and industry experts and submitted in a new version.

The essence of the initiative is to permit specificities of coastal fishing in the Northern Fishery Basin. This will allow the production of cod liver preserves directly at sea not only on large vessels but also on small and medium fishing ships.

As explained by Senator Elena Dyagileva, currently such preserves can be made at sea only on large processor vessels. Moreover, cod liver is difficult to transport to shore without loss of quality, so the valuable raw material is often simply disposed of.

The authors of the bill believe that changes in legislation will allow for the production of an additional about 900 thousand cans of cod liver preserves per year.

The initiative has already been supported by Murmansk Region Governor Andrey Chibis and representatives of the fishing industry. According to experts, the adoption of the law will be a serious support for coastal fishing in the Barents Sea and will help to use catches more efficiently.
