Berries are gradually finishing in Arkhangelsk, and raspberries are still being picked, but there are already significantly fewer of them. Except for this one — the bushes still have plenty of berries, there are no thorns, no worms, and the fruit is larger than usual. 29.RU reader Yekaterina told us what this variety is and why it is worth planting such bushes this autumn to stretch out the raspberry season next year.

These berries can be red, but they are considered ripe when they take on this purple hue.

— We ordered this raspberry from a catalog as an experiment and were very pleased. The regular berries have already finished, but this one is still hanging, — says Yekaterina. — It tastes just as good, except it is not as distinctly tart. We have the Glen Coe variety, which is notable for having no thorns on the bushes, making harvesting much easier. We also noticed that the berries of this variety never have worms.

These are the giants.

Purple raspberry is a hybrid of red and black raspberry. The berries are dark, large, and juicy. The taste is sweetish, with notes of blackberry. It has high yields and vigorous bushes. There are several popular varieties: Glen Coe (thornless), Royalty, and Purple Jewel.

It is curious that there are no worms in the berry.

— Purple raspberry turned out to be undemanding and bears fruit abundantly and for a long time. It is best to plant this variety in autumn, at the end of September. Although my friends planted it in spring, in early May, before the buds opened, and everything took root. In my opinion, autumn planting is better: the seedlings have time to take root before the frosts, — says Yekaterina.

The planting site should be sunny so the berries are sweet later. Also, it is better not to plant this purple raspberry next to regular raspberries to avoid possible infections.

Yekaterina says the berries are large and full of juice. Her family makes fresh smoothies and fruit drinks from this raspberry, and freezes it for winter.

— We freeze it not as whole berries but as a blended mixture. We puree the soft berries with a blender and add sugar: 150 grams per kilogram. We mix and pour into containers. The sugar is not so much for taste as for storage; it works as a preservative.

Earlier we wrote about why raspberry jam is not the healthiest way to make winter preparations.

We also shared an unusual way to preserve cucumbers: a recipe was shared by a cardiac surgeon from Arkhangelsk.
