In autumn the weather usually turns for the worse, and so does our mood — the body lacks sunlight and warmth. At this time of year, tasty and wholesome drinks help warm us up and lift our spirits. For example, you can make hot chocolate yourself. Here’s how to do it quickly and easily. We’ve prepared two recipes.

A simple hot chocolate recipe can use either solid chocolate or cocoa powder. Below are recipes for both options.

Home cooks can choose either method, using chocolate or cocoa powder, to prepare hot chocolate.

Using chocolate

What you need:

  1. dark or bittersweet chocolate — 1 bar;

  2. milk — 0.5 l;

  3. sugar — to taste.

What to do

For classic hot chocolate, use dark chocolate with 70–75% cocoa, without additives or fillings. Avoid milk chocolate, which is too sweet, as well as chocolate with nuts or other add-ins.

Warm the milk in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly. It should begin to foam lightly, but not boil. Finely chop the chocolate before melting it; a sharp knife works best. Put the chopped pieces in a separate saucepan and set over low heat. When the chocolate has fully melted and the surface looks glossy, add the milk and sugar to taste. Reduce the heat and whisk until smooth. Pour the finished hot chocolate into mugs.

Using cocoa powder

What you need:

  1. cocoa powder — 2 tbsp;

  2. sugar — 1 tbsp;

  3. potato starch — 1 tbsp;

  4. milk — 400 ml;

  5. salt — a pinch.

What to do

Sift the cocoa powder and starch to thicken the drink, add a pinch of salt and the sugar, and mix. Pour in 75 ml of hot milk taken from the total and stir vigorously until smooth. Pour the remaining milk into a saucepan and bring to a boil, then add the chocolate mixture. Bring back to a boil and cook for 1–2 minutes over low heat. The hot chocolate is ready.
