Brazilian Watermelons and 'Toad Skin' Melons Sold in Tyumen

In the midst of the winter months, stores in Tyumen surprised customers with the appearance of watermelons and melons.

The watermelons belong to the Brazilian variety Carino. Experts report: «This is the Brazilian variety Carino. The watermelons have a round or oval shape, usually weighing no more than 12 kilograms (26 lb). The fruits of this variety ripen early, in just 58–62 days.»

In the Perekrestok supermarket chain, the price for these watermelons is set at 369 rubles per kilogram (about $4 at current rates).

On the same displays, yellow melons of the Piel de Sapo variety are presented, which translates as «toad skin». This Spanish variety is distinguished by its dark green, dense, spotted skin and sweet, juicy, white or pale green flesh. With proper storage, the melons can last up to a month and a half.
Previously, residents of Tyumen had already noticed unusual mandarins with wrinkled skin and expensive tomatoes, which turned out to be special varieties.
