Understanding the humor of many scientific memes often requires specialized knowledge, for example, in quantum physics, genetic engineering, or programming. On February 5, the St. Petersburg Informatsionny Tsentr po Atomnoy Energii (ITsAE, the Information Center for Atomic Energy) will host a talk show dedicated to such jokes. The event is free and designed for audiences aged 16 and older.
The term «meme» itself has scientific origins — it was coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. At the talk show, serious scientists will not only show popular memes but also explain in detail which phenomena and terms are being parodied, making the humor accessible to a broad audience.
- Margarita Tyupina, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, head of the laboratory of medical isotope technologies at JSC Radium Institute named after V. G. Khlopin, will analyze chemistry memes.
- Alexander Kukaev, Candidate of Technical Sciences, head of the Department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Graphics at LETI, will explain physics jokes.
- Valery Efremov, Doctor of Philology, leading researcher at the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will analyze linguistics memes.
The event will take place on February 5 at 4 Aerodromnaya Street. The talk show will start at 7:00 p.m., but guests can arrive earlier. At 5:00 p.m., there is a tour of the interactive exhibition «Atomic Energy,» and at 6:00 p.m., an intellectual game «Atoms Beautifully Assembled.» Registration is required in advance on the ITsAE website.
