How a Yekaterinburg woman's viral video made her famous
31-year-old Yulia Dunaeva from Verkhnyaya Pyshma, known under the pseudonym MC Kisulya, gained popularity thanks to humorous rap songs that she published online. The videos quickly spread across Russia, and Kisulya became almost the main meme character of the 2010s. One of the performer«s most famous songs is »I don«t need tights like me, beauty.»
She also gained recognition at the start of her career thanks to entertainment internet shows, among which were «+100500» and «This Is Good». Yulia long hid her identity from fans — only her closest ones knew that she was the very MC Kisulya.
Several years ago, thanks to a collaboration with video blogger Maxim TheBrianMaps, she revealed her secret and switched to serious creativity under the pseudonym «The Other». Who MC Kisulya is and how she lives now — watch in the E1.RU video above.
The story of MC Kisulya began by chance. In university, the girl decided to record humorous videos for her friends. Soon, the local meme spread across all of Russia:
«In the moment, the image of MC Kisulya is created: a turtleneck is pulled on, a bob haircut is done, lips are painted, a mole is drawn, glasses are put on. It was all an absolute flow, self-irony. The track was written to the first beat that came along. I decided I would be Tomochka Pryalkina.»
The pseudonym «MC Kisulya» appeared spontaneously as well. For her image, Yulia found a turtleneck with cats, gifted by her mother. She admitted that in everyday life she never wore it, but for the character, the item fit perfectly.
«I uploaded this video to a page on VKontakte, which I had just created to complement this joke. I sent it to friends, and it should have ended there. But then I go into the social network and see that some boom is starting there. I don»t understand what«s happening, who these people are, why they»re writing to me. The page was zero, no one posted it anywhere, there were no reposts then,« the artist shared her memories.
