Udmurtia Sets Special School Attendance Rules for Cold Weather

The Udmurtia Ministry of Education has outlined specific temperature thresholds that allow students to stay home from school.

Udmurtia has established a special procedure for school attendance in cold weather. This was reported by the press service of the republic«s Ministry of Education.

On the night of January 22–23, Udmurtia was hit by Epiphany frosts (a traditional cold snap). In some parts of the republic, the temperature dropped below –35 degrees Celsius (–31 degrees Fahrenheit). The lowest readings were recorded in Debessy and Glazov. In these settlements, it cooled down to –38.5 and –36.8 degrees Celsius (–37.3 and –34.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

According to forecasts from the regional Hydrometeorological Center, another frosty night is expected. The temperature will drop to –30 to –39 degrees Celsius (–22 to –38.2 degrees Fahrenheit).

Due to the abnormally cold weather, the republic«s Ministry of Education has established a special procedure for school attendance. Students may skip classes if the temperature reaches the following values:

Grades 1–4: –25 degrees Celsius (–13 degrees Fahrenheit) and below;
Grades 1–6: –25 degrees Celsius (–13 degrees Fahrenheit) with wind from 5 m/s; –26 to –27 degrees Celsius (–14.8 to –16.6 degrees Fahrenheit) with light wind; –28 to –29 degrees Celsius (–18.4 to –20.2 degrees Fahrenheit) (without wind);
Grades 7–9: –26 to –27 degrees Celsius (–14.8 to –16.6 degrees Fahrenheit) with strong wind; –28 to –29 degrees Celsius (–18.4 to –20.2 degrees Fahrenheit) with wind 1–4 m/s; –30 degrees Celsius (–22 degrees Fahrenheit) (without wind);
Grades 10–11: –28 to –29 degrees Celsius (–18.4 to –20.2 degrees Fahrenheit) with wind from 5 m/s; –30 degrees Celsius (–22 degrees Fahrenheit) with wind; below –31 degrees Celsius (–23.8 degrees Fahrenheit) (without wind).

However, as noted by the press service of the department, the final decision on switching students to distance learning is made by the school administration.

«Monitor official sources: the school website, government public pages, chats, announcements from the homeroom teacher. If the school announces a cancellation — stay home,» added the Ministry of Education.
