Ninth Graders, Get Ready: New Enrollment System Brings Both Opportunities and Risks

A school student can enter a specialized 10th grade on a general basis by passing selection based on OGE results.
The large-scale transformations taking place in Russia«s secondary education system are opening up historically unique opportunities and horizons for 9th grade graduates, which their parents could not even dream of.

No matter what circumstances a child is in by the end of 9th grade, no matter the state of their preparation, there is always a promising trajectory with a large-scale infrastructure paid for by the budget. This includes the system of specialized 10th-11th grades, which any school student can now enter on a general basis, having passed an individual selection based on OGE (Basic State Exam) results.

However, the new enrollment system for 10th grades, besides opportunities, carries risks that one must know about in order not to unexpectedly end up empty-handed when, it seemed, nothing foreshadowed it. What are we talking about?

Risk No. 1. Schools independently choose specializations from the approved Federal State Educational Standards (FSES) list. It may turn out that your school is now the only one in the district with a class of this particular specialization. Or the only strong school in the district with this specialization. Therefore, children from all over the district (some from other districts) will come to apply, inevitably increasing the competition and the minimum OGE score level to get into the ranking.

Solution No. 1
Risk No. 2. You were guided by last year«s school requirements for individual selection, but for the upcoming academic year the school has issued new requirements. For example, last year the ranking was calculated based on the sum of OGE scores in two specialized subjects converted to a 100-point system, and this year they added mathematics. Or, having added mathematics, they removed one of the specialized elective subjects.

Solution No. 2
Thus, by the start of enrollment, the child will have improved OGE results in a wider range of subjects, achievements in school competitions/olympiads, and applications to several schools. This will multiply the child«s chances of entering a good specialized 10th grade class in a strong school!

Solution No. 3
At a city-wide meeting on 8 February 2026 on enrollment in specialized 10th grades, the compilers of the City OGE Portal will speak. The portal has already published official information on the number and specializations of specialized classes opening in Yekaterinburg for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The meeting will be held at the venue of EGEburg — the leading project in Yekaterinburg for preparation for the OGE, EGE (Unified State Exam), and exams for the UrFU (Ural Federal University) Specialized Educational and Scientific Center (SESC). Registration is mandatory.

By order No. 72 of the Ministry of Investments and Development of the Sverdlovsk Region dated 23 May 2025, EGEburg received the status of a social enterprise for solving tasks important for the region.
