Medical Tourists Go to St. Petersburg for Treatment
At a meeting of the St. Petersburg government on January 29, Dmitry Lisovets reported on the financial results of the Territorial Fund of Compulsory Medical Insurance (TFOMS). Receipts from the Federal Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund related to providing assistance to patients from other regions amounted to 12.2 billion rubles (approximately $128 million at current rates).
The number of people coming to the city on the Neva for medical services shows steady growth.
The most financially intensive area was oncology: calculations for the treatment of cancer patients accounted for 2 billion rubles (approximately $21 million at current rates).
In terms of the number of cases handled, traumatology and orthopedics lead.
«Moreover, high demand is noted for services in the field of surgery, emergency medical care, and neurosurgery,» added the head of the TFOMS.
St. Petersburg also maintains its position as one of the country«s leading centers for assisted reproductive technologies. In 2025, 4,900 in vitro fertilization procedures were performed for city residents, and 2,500 such procedures for patients from other regions of the Russian Federation.
The final financial indicators of the St. Petersburg TFOMS for 2025 were as follows: the fund«s expenses amounted to 183.1 billion rubles (approximately $1.93 billion at current rates), and income reached 185.6 billion rubles (approximately $1.95 billion at current rates).
