The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Kuzbass commented on the reasons for the increase in the cost of cucumbers in stores in the region, which are now sold for 700–1,000 rubles ($7-$10 at current rates). On Thursday, February 5, the authorities said they could not influence the situation.
According to the ministry, fresh cucumbers are not classified as socially significant products, which is why their prices are not regulated at the state level.
«The main reason for the price increase of vegetables is the rise in purchase prices, initiated by fresh vegetable suppliers,» the department reported, citing data from retail chains.
It is clarified that in winter there is a gradual increase in prices for all vegetables, as the supply market shrinks. The cost then decreases closer to the vegetable harvest.
The NGS42 editorial staff drew attention to the fact that cucumber prices have sharply increased by 1.5–3 times: now they are sold from 300 rubles per kilogram ($3 at current rates) and up to 990 rubles ($10 at current rates) if purchasing the same volume individually.
Note that for the same reasons, the state does not influence the cost of fuel, which is why gasoline and diesel prices are constantly rising.
