Reunited for a lifetime: The love story of Vera Alentova and Vladimir Menshov

Vera Alentova and Vladimir Menshov«s lifelong romance lasted through decades of Soviet and post-Soviet history.
Vera Alentova passed away on 25 December. The People«s Artist of Russia, beloved nationwide for her role as Katya Tikhomirova in »Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears«, died at the age of 83. She outlived her husband, director Vladimir Menshov, by four years.
We decided to remind you of their beautiful lifelong love story: the couple were together for 59 years.
Opposites Attract?
They met at the Moscow Art Theatre (MKHAT) School-Studio. Vera Alentova, a talented and promising student, got in on her first try. Vladimir Menshov, a determined young man from Astrakhan, had tried to get into theater universities four times before ending up on the same course as her. The teachers didn«t see a great future for him and were surprised when their star pupil took a liking to him.
But Vera saw what was hidden from others.
«He read a lot, he was an erudite boy. I didn«t understand the teachers, why they couldn»t see in him what I saw», she recalled.

Vera Alentova was seen as a rising star by her teachers during her student years.
Menshov himself later admitted with surprise: «In terms of demeanor and type, I am not her kind of person. And if we hadn«t studied in the same course, we wouldn»t have been together. We were given the rarest chance to get to know each other».
Not Enough Money for Champagne
The young couple married in their second year of study, spending their last 20 rubles (less than $1 at current rates) — Menshov«s stipend — on the celebration. They took a tram to the registry office and held the celebration in a student dorm room. There was no wedding dress — the bride wore the most festive dress from her wardrobe. They didn»t even have enough money for champagne, and the best man paid for it. But that didn«t matter.
«We went back to the dorm and had a wonderful celebration with the guys from our course. There were herring, cucumbers, tomatoes on the table», Alentova recounted warmly.
Alentova«s career spanned theater, film, and television over half a century.
The Birth of a Daughter, Separation, and Infidelity
Life didn«t get easier right after the wedding. The couple lived for a long time in separate dorms — a men»s and a women«s. After graduating from the institute, their paths diverged geographically: Vera was accepted into Moscow»s Pushkin Theater, while Vladimir was assigned to the Stavropol Drama Theater. Years of forced separation began, which they endured through daily correspondence.
When Menshov returned to Moscow and enrolled at VGIK (the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography), and the couple had their daughter Yulia in 1969, the everyday difficulties only intensified. Money was catastrophically short. Vladimir, a postgraduate student, unloaded bread at a bakery at night, and Vera returned to work at the theater shortly after giving birth. Tension built up.
«Everyday life, a small child — it«s hard… Especially when you are »newcomers« and have no one to turn to for help. It»s not whims that start, but inevitably grievances», the actress shared.

The couple with their young daughter Yulia, who would also grow up to become a successful actress.
This burden became too heavy. When their daughter was about three years old, the spouses made the difficult decision to live separately. There was no official divorce, but their paths diverged for several years.
At that time, Vladimir began a romance with a young actress named Lyudmila Tueva. Vera, who had received an apartment from the theater, contrary to common sense and the advice of friends, registered her husband in it. It was an irrational but eloquent gesture — her heart refused to put a full stop.
Returning Home
Their memory of love and their daughter saved them.
«Usually I break up with people sharply and forever. But I found our letters, immersed myself in the atmosphere of that passionate, great love. And everything else seemed strange and petty. It«s the most precious thing in life», Alentova admitted later.

Alentova«s portrayal of factory worker Katya Tikhomirova won her national fame.
They started seeing each other again, Vladimir would come to visit, spend time with Yulia. When it was time to take their daughter to her first day of school, they went together. And after the ceremony, they returned as a family of three, to one apartment. That«s how their family reunited.
«Vera and I, in our first life together, were intolerant, tried to change each other, made demands, judged», Menshov analyzed later. — «In the end, we reached the point of separation… But nothing can be more important than love, mutual respect, understanding, and tolerance».
They found their balance. Vera was better at handling household matters and repairs, while Vladimir, once he tried her cooking, gladly took on the role of the family chef.
«Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears»
Their creative union gave the world one of the most famous Soviet films — «Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears». Menshov, as the director, invited his wife to play the lead role. He worried that he would be accused of favoritism and was particularly strict with her.
Their joint work was crowned with incredible success: long lines at cinemas and the coveted Oscar statuette.

The director feared accusations of nepotism for casting his wife in his most famous film.
«The first one to get all the negativity on set is inevitably a close person, which is also understandable: it«s awkward to vent on a stranger, but you can say anything you want to your own in the heat of the moment», Alentova recalled about working with Menshov.
But fame didn«t change their family lifestyle. They consciously shielded their daughter Yulia from the concept of the »golden youth« (privileged children of the elite), raising her with modesty and a strong work ethic. She wasn»t even allowed to wear jeans brought from abroad to school, so as not to stand out from her classmates. In the summer, her father sent her to relatives in Astrakhan, where she weeded tomato beds.
He Missed Their Diamond Wedding by a Year
After living together for more than fifty years, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and then had a church wedding. This didn«t change their daily life but brought deep inner peace.
«Has anything changed in my life? No! But peace has settled in my soul!» said Vera Valentinovna.
They were never shy about saying that their marriage was work — difficult and daily. But from this work grew something stronger than any passion — deep attachment, shared memories, and respect. There were also moments of pure romance, which Alentova kept in her heart. Once, seeing his wife off on a tour, Vladimir jumped on the train without a ticket.
«He lay down on my seat and slept wonderfully. And I sat on my haunches all night, watching him, thinking what happiness it was», the actress recalled.
Vladimir Menshov passed away in 2021, missing their diamond wedding anniversary with Vera by a year. Together they lived for 59 years.

Vladimir Menshov«s death was a devastating blow for his wife of nearly six decades.
Vera Alentova outlived him by four and a half years. Yesterday, on 25 December 2025, during the farewell ceremony for actor Anatoly Lobotsky, the People«s Artist fell ill. She was taken away by ambulance and attempts were made to resuscitate her, but they were unsuccessful. And now, as their daughter Yulia Menshova wrote, Vladimir Menshov has finally been reunited with his wife.
The farewell ceremony for Vera Alentova will take place on 29 December at the Pushkin Theater.
