Former Nizhny deputy governor sentenced for 'House on Gorky' fraud

The prosecution had sought a 10-year prison term for the former official in the fraud case.
A court has issued a verdict for former deputy governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Valery Anglichaninov. He was found guilty of fraud with equity holders« money during the construction of the residential complex »House on Gorky«, reports Kommersant-Volga.
Valery Anglichaninov headed the construction unit in the regional cabinet under Governor Valery Shantsev. He left his post in 2010. The businessman began building the elite residential complex in the center of Nizhny Novgorod in 2015 and planned to complete the work by 2018, but in the end it dragged on for ten years. As a result, the company Intercity, where Anglichaninov was deputy general director, was declared bankrupt. The construction had to be completed by the developer Khutor — it commissioned the building last autumn.
Back in 2023, Valery Anglichaninov was sentenced to four years in a penal colony for fraud in the construction of a house for FSB (Federal Security Service) employees in the Moscow region. At the same time, a criminal case was initiated against him for the embezzlement of almost 274 million rubles (about $3 million at current rates) from equity holders of the residential complex «House on Gorky».
Taking into account the previous sentence, the prosecutor«s office requested 10 years of imprisonment for the ex-deputy governor. In the end, Anglichaninov was sentenced to six years — this is the amount of time he will spend in a general regime colony by combining the two sentences.
