Chelyabinsk ex-prosecutor gets 7 years for fraud

A former prosecutor in Chelyabinsk Region was sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud after promising to influence a defendant's sentence.

Former prosecutor of Argayash District Kurmangazy Uruspaev received seven years in a general-regime penal colony and a fine of 1.8 million rubles (about $20,000 at current rates) in a fraud case. The verdict was announced on Tuesday, 21 July, by a court in Argayash. As an additional punishment, the ex-prosecutor was banned from working in public service for three years.

Uruspaev served in the prosecutor«s office for 26 years before his arrest.

«Uruspaev has been stripped of his class rank of Senior Counselor of Justice for committing the crime,» the court added.

Uruspaev had been under investigation since last summer, and all agencies refrained from official comments. According to 74.RU, FSB officers detained him for receiving five million rubles (about $55,000 at current rates). Uruspaev, according to case materials, promised to influence the sentence of a former construction company head and secure a suspended sentence for him. That person was accused of embezzlement while executing a defense order and, despite the promises, still received a prison term.

Kurmangazy Uruspaev was born in the south of Chelyabinsk Region in 1977 and served in the prosecutor«s office for 26 years. In 1999, he graduated from the Ural State Law Academy and took a position as an investigator in the Agapovsky District prosecutor»s office. From spring 2022, he served as prosecutor of Argayash District. Before that, he headed the Katav-Ivanovsk prosecutor«s office for 10 years. He was detained in July 2025.
