Why young woodpeckers die in central Novosibirsk

A young woodpecker leaves its nest for the first time during the late summer fledging season.
Residents of Novosibirsk are finding dead woodpeckers in the city center. An ornithologist has explained what may be causing this.

This woodpecker was found near the TSUM department store in central Novosibirsk.
«We found a dead woodpecker opposite TSUM,» a reader wrote to NGS. «Passers-by say that not far away, on Vokzalnaya Magistral, a similar sight has already been seen.»
Novosibirsk ornithologist Alexei Yanovsky told NGS that this woodpecker may have collided with an obstacle in flight.
«The second half of summer has arrived — this is the time when a new generation of birds leaves the nest for most species. Young, inexperienced individuals more often than adults end up in dangerous situations,» added Alexei Yanovsky.
The expert noted that in the city, wires between buildings, as well as glass and mirrored surfaces of windows and walls, especially those with backlighting at night, are dangerous for birds in flight.
At the end of June, NGS reported that a yellow-throated marten was discovered in Pervomaisky Square.
