Volgograd Volunteers Try to Save Orphaned Hedgehogs
Orphaned baby hedgehogs huddle in a narrow pit under a dacha garage
In Volgograd, concerned residents are trying to save five baby hedgehogs from death after they have survived without their mother for several days. The animals were found at a dacha (country cottage) area, and people are looking for someone who can feed them.
Every morning the prickly babies come out of their shelter and look for their mother
A message seeking volunteers who could replace the hedgehogs« mother appeared in the group of the Dino animal shelter:
— People found baby hedgehogs at a dacha, — the post«s authors write. — The mother hedgehog has not appeared for several days. The dacha owners started feeding the little ones goat»s milk, but once the weekend is over they will have to return to work and will be forced to leave them. Anyone ready to take care of the prickly little ones — call us.
The photographs indeed show five small hedgehogs living in a pit under a summer garage. According to the woman who found them, the animals are only a few days old at most:
— They are still blind, their quills are already gray but still soft, — said the woman who found the hedgehogs. — Their mother dug a pit under the summer garage, they come out every morning, crying. My son feeds them from a pipette, but we are not professionals, we don«t know how to do it properly or what needs to be done. We are afraid the hedgehogs will simply die! We work, and they need to be fed every 2–3 hours! Please understand us correctly — we are not getting rid of them, we just feel terribly sorry for five living souls.
According to the woman, the hedgehogs were found on Friday. On Saturday morning she called the Ptichy Ostrov (Bird Island) shelter, but after lengthy negotiations they were told to feed the hedgehogs on their own.
— I called Dino, they said they don«t deal with small animals, that they only work with large ones, but they posted the message, — the woman says. — It seems volunteers have been found; this morning they promised to come and pick up the hedgehogs. I really hope it happens and that the little ones are saved!
