Two manuls (Pallas«s cats), Zelenogorsk and Karaganda, have died at Novosibirsk Zoo — they were known far beyond the city. Both wild cats lived to be 15 years old.
«Our famous manuls, whom many called the elders, are gone. Zelenogorsk and Karaganda passed away 12 days apart. In the wild, manuls live on average 6–8 years; in zoos, about 12 years,» Novosibirsk Zoo reported.
The manuls were favorites of both staff and zoo visitors. Videos of them amassed millions of views on social media.
«Thanks to numerous photographs and videos, these two animals were known worldwide. Manuls are not big fans of excessive attention, but our elder manuls always allowed the public to observe them. And in front of photographers and camera operators, they sometimes even seemed to pose,» the zoo added.
Each manul left numerous offspring in their time. Their descendants live in zoos in Moscow, Barnaul, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, and Japan.
In Krasnoyarsk, manul Boris currently lives, who came from Novosibirsk Zoo.
