Three-Legged Dog Rescued from Yakutsk Cold Finds Home

Carrie was born on the streets somewhere in Yakutia and spent her first year surviving the harsh conditions of the Far North. Then a car hit her in the middle of a Yakutsk highway. The driver drove on, leaving the animal to die in 50-degree frost (minus 58°F).
Puppies abandoned in the woods were taken in by readers; this is one of them.
For several hours, the helpless dog lay on the snowy road. Eventually, a compassionate driver picked her up, contacted animal welfare volunteers, and Carrie was taken to a shelter. She survived, but one frostbitten paw had to be amputated.

The rescued dog was placed in a shelter, and after some time she ended up in the Urals. Animal welfare volunteers brought her here. We don«t know exactly what»s happening now in Yakutsk shelters, but four years ago volunteers from across the country were mass-evacuating animals from there due to very poor living conditions: dogs were dying of hunger and cold.
Three years ago, a family saved buried puppies.
In the Urals, Carrie had more bad luck. Her new owner treated her cruelly: beat the crippled dog, kept her in a cage, and let her out for walks for literally five minutes at a time.
Carrie finally has a home with loving owners.
Some neighbors who witnessed the abuse asked volunteers for help to have the animal removed from such conditions. The owner gave Carrie back, and she ended up in a shelter.
«People who cared about Carrie regularly wrote to me, asking for help to take her in. From them I learned her story: how she was hit by a car, how she lay in the snow for several hours, and had her paw amputated due to frostbite,» says Evgenia Khanipova, head of the shelter «Lapka Pomoshchi» (Paw of Help). «And about how she was living in poor conditions. We took her in. She turned out to be very timid and modest, yet she still has love for people. She adores children and is generally very friendly to everyone, despite everything.»
There was little chance anyone would take an adult three-legged dog from a shelter... But everything turned out well—within a month, Carrie found a new home. She was taken in by our reader, Yekaterinburg lawyer Irina Abramova.
«I already have one dog. A few years ago I read a story on E1.RU about how puppies were found near Beryozovsky, someone had tried to get rid of them. Some scoundrel stuffed the puppies into a bag and piled sticks on them. A family—husband, wife, and children—happened to walk by, heard them whimpering, and saved them,» Irina recalls.
Back then, through E1.RU, new owners were sought for the puppies. Irina couldn«t pass by and took one for herself. Mulya is now three years old. She is a cheerful, kind, affectionate dog, her daughter»s favorite and a playmate.
«We also have two cats, also rescued. The black, fluffy one is Manya—I found her at the container yard near our house, she was a kitten, covered in blood. She was about three months old, February 2021, someone had thrown her out. She was already cold when I picked her up. I rushed to the vet clinic, the doctor said another 10-15 minutes and she would have died. They fought for her for two days in intensive care. She»s an incredibly smart, affectionate cat; now she«s constantly catching voles and bringing them from the forest to our terrace.
I took Yasha the cat from a shelter six years ago. No one wanted him because he was restless, constantly meowing; he was adopted and returned several times—but with us he settled in, he fell in love with my daughter, has protected her since birth. If she cried, he«d run to me, and now he watches over her.
And so we decided to get a second dog, as company. We live outside the city, in our own house with a fenced yard where they can run and play. Of course, I wanted to get a puppy, but Zhenya, the shelter owner, my good friend, told me about Carrie and her fate. She asked me to take her specifically, because otherwise no one would. Her story touched me. So Carrie ended up in our home. She«s a wonderful dog, very friendly and affectionate. Now all the bad things are finally behind her, and she will have a quite happy dog»s life,« says Irina Abramova.
