The elk named Oktyabr, which Yaroslavl residents tried to save, has died. This was reported on January 30 by the Ministry of Forestry and Environmental Management of Yaroslavl Region.
«The elk did not survive the transportation to the rehabilitation center. Despite the efforts of specialists and concerned people, the animal did not survive — the lengthy transport only worsened the situation,» the Ministry of Natural Resources reported.
The ministry added that an autopsy at the rehabilitation center showed that the animal had a fractured scapula, multiple hematomas in the abdominal cavity, lung contusion, and liver damage. It is likely that the elk was previously involved in a traffic accident.
Recall that the injured elk was found by residents of the Oktyabr settlement in Nekouz District. The animal fell through the ice in a pond near the settlement. The elk was pulled out, but it turned out that it could not walk.
Concerned people made a bed of hay for the elk, covered it with blankets, and brought food and water. For several days, the elk lay near the settlement.
People appealed to various authorities to obtain help for the animal. As a result, hunting inspectors and veterinary service specialists got involved in solving the problem. They examined the animal. Its condition was assessed as stable. It was decided to transport the elk to the forest, as veterinarians believed that due to its presence near the settlement, the elk was experiencing chronic stress, which hindered its recovery.
The Ministry of Natural Resources then clarified that veterinarians do not recommend transporting the animal over a significant distance, as this could lead to its death.
However, concerned people did not want to leave the elk, which could not walk, in the forest. The elk was agreed to be accepted at the «Bely Los» (White Elk) center in the Moscow Region. A fundraiser was organized for the animal«s transportation and its accompaniment by a veterinarian during the journey. When the elk arrived at the rehabilitation center, it was still alive. It was being prepared for examination and treatment.
The Ministry of Forestry and Environmental Management of Yaroslavl Region advised residents not to attempt to rescue wild animals on their own, as they have a better chance of survival in natural conditions. Moreover, it can be dangerous for humans due to diseases carried by animals, such as rabies and tularemia. Large animals can cause serious injuries to humans. If a wild animal in need of help is found, it is recommended to call the 24-hour number 112.
