In 2025, veterinary services in Altai Krai recorded 29 cases of rabies in animals. The infection spread to 18 districts of the region, as well as the regional capital — Barnaul. This was reported to NGS22.RU by the regional veterinary administration.

The main carriers of the virus are wild animals, primarily foxes, as well as domestic pets — dogs and cats that have not been vaccinated. While in 2024 only 15 cases were registered, in 2025 their number doubled, reaching 29.

«Rabies is widespread and is recorded annually in Altai Krai. The disease is cyclical in nature. The natural landscape features of the region are favorable for the existence of a diversity of wild fauna, and the population size, especially of carnivorous animals, is sufficient to maintain rabies hotspots,» the administration added.

In connection with the identified rabies cases, restrictive measures (quarantine) have been introduced in the following districts: Aleysky, Biysky, Blagoveshchensky, Bystroistoksky, Loktevsky, Mamontovsky, Novichikhinsky, Pervomaysky, Rebrikhinsky, Smolensky, Soltonsky, Talmensky, Tretyakovsky, Tyumentsevsky, Khabarsky, Tselinny, Charyshsky, Shipunovsky, as well as in the city of Barnaul.

To control the spread of the virus, ongoing work is being carried out to regulate the number of wild carnivorous animals.
