Omsk Volunteer Cares for Swift With Dislocated Wing

Six swifts live with the volunteer in Omsk because they cannot be released back into nature.
Volunteer and founder of the «Swifts. Omsk» community on VKontakte, Olga Grushevskaya, told an NGS55.RU correspondent how she is caring for a bird with a dislocated wing.

The bird suffers from a wing dislocation that prevents it from ever flying again.
The swift named Vasya came into her care last summer. Typically, volunteers treat birds and release them, but this is not possible here. Because of the wing structure, the dislocation cannot be reset for swifts, so it will never be able to fly.
«He came to me last summer. Someone brought him to a veterinary clinic first, then handed him over to me. I hoped he would fly away. I even tried to release him. Initially, the X-ray didn»t reveal anything. Birds with fractures and dislocations are doomed,« she said.
Olga also shared that she currently has six swifts like Vasya living at her home. All of them are unable to return to the wild due to injuries or plumage issues.
«Usually in summer, we help chicks return to the sky. Those living with me will never fly again. Two have dislocations, and four others are healthy but have plumage issues. One swift named Kesha is spending its third winter with me,» she added.
