‘Noise All Around’: Rare Three-Toed Woodpecker Spotted in Novosibirsk

The three-toed woodpecker is captured on video pecking vigorously at a wooden fence in the zoo«s dinosaur park.
In Novosibirsk, an unusual bird — a three-toed woodpecker — flew onto the zoo grounds in January 2026. Video of it was published on the institution«s Telegram channel on January 26.
The bird«s bright yellow head marking is clearly visible as it perches on the enclosure.
The three-toed woodpecker is also called the yellow-headed woodpecker, clarified the zoo. It inhabits coniferous and mixed forests in the region, but is encountered less frequently than other members of this family.
«In the city limits, it is not a frequent visitor at all. The woodpecker that flew into the zoo was seen at the moment when it was pecking at a wooden fence in the dino park,» the institution said. «The beauty with a yellow cap was working so hard that the noise was heard all around.»
The unusual bird was filmed by a zoo employee. In the footage, it can be seen how the woodpecker sits on the fence and taps its beak on the wood. On the bird«s head, there is a bright yellow spot.
«The zoological park monitors freely living species, and the yellow-headed woodpecker had not been encountered by us before,» said zoo employee Anastasia Vishnevetskaya.
At the end of January, an owl flew into the center of Novosibirsk. The forest bird was captured on video.
