Specialists from the Ministry of Ecology of Nizhny Novgorod Region conducted a review of the regional Red Book last year. New biological species under threat of extinction were added to the list, while some whose numbers have recovered were removed.

According to the department, the work to update the list is ongoing. The latest update took place in 2024, and a new edition of the document has already been prepared in 2025.

Scientists are constantly receiving new information about the region«s living organisms. This allows them to more accurately determine which species no longer require special protection and which, on the contrary, need strict conservation.

As a result of the review last year, the following were placed under protection:

  • 30 species of animals, birds, and insects;
  • 30 species of fungi, lichens, and plants.
12 species of plants and 47 species of animals and birds were removed from the list of rare species.

Earlier, a photojournalist captured rare birds for the region — pine grosbeaks feeding on rowan berries in the Sovetsky district of Nizhny Novgorod.
