Did you know that service dogs also retire? The canine handlers of the rescue service in Arkhangelsk region have shown puppies that, when grown, will help search for missing people and replace the «old-timers» who have retired.

In the center of the photo is Fandi, a dog who has been working with the rescue service canine handlers since 2019. In the spring she will retire and live at home with her new owner. Next to Fandi are the young helpers who have recently begun their service: Onega and Orleans.

The young puppies are introduced to their future roles as rescue dogs.

«Fandi has been in service since 2019. Over the years, she has gained valuable experience and participated in searching for people. The specialization of all three dogs is the search and rescue service (SRS): free search, search for living people in natural environments and on man-made rubble,» the rescue service reported.

And these puppies are still very small, but soon they are to become the assistants of the canine handlers.

«A search and rescue dog is born not at the moment of certification, but in puppyhood. Its ability to one day save a life is not an accident or breed magic, but a direct result of every day spent with a human in the first months of its life,» the rescue service canine handlers said.

By the way, we managed to meet Fandi during a training trip of the canine handlers near Arkhangelsk. Read and see how smart dogs search for missing people.

Recently, five puppies were also born at the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) kennel: see how cute they are.
