Last year, specialists from the Ministry of Ecology of the Nizhny Novgorod region revised the regional Red Data Book. New species of flora and fauna that are on the verge of extinction were added, while some were excluded due to population control. The ministry provided more details to NN.RU.

According to representatives of the Ministry of Ecology, the work to update the Red Data Book is ongoing. The list of rare species was last revised in 2024, and the next revision took place in 2025.

Specialists are receiving more and more data about the living organisms of the region, so they have a better understanding of which species can already be excluded from the Book and which need careful protection.

Thus, last year 30 species of animals, birds, and insects were added to the list of rare species, and the same number of species of fungi, lichens, and plants. It was decided to exclude 12 species of plants and 47 species of animals and birds from the regional Red Data Book.

By the way, earlier a photojournalist from NN.RU captured rare birds for the region — pine grosbeaks (shchury) on camera. At that moment, they were feasting on rowan berries in the Sovetsky district of Nizhny Novgorod. We tell you what kind of birds these are in an article.
