Then he received a gift from his father—red boxing gloves and a punching bag—and became inspired with the dream of boxing. But nearby there was only a kickboxing section, where the boy was taken. After work, dad regularly trained with Albert using focus mitts.

«I understood that this might be my only chance to show the world what I can do. And I remember all the qualifying fights, the pandemic, training camps, all the restrictions due to coronavirus. It was very hard. I remember the opening of the Olympics, the joy and pride we felt being there. I remember the atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect,» the athlete said.

In the quarterfinals, Albert defeated Mongolian boxer Erdenebatyn Tsendbaatar. The Yugra native was trailing after two rounds. In such a situation, to win, it was necessary to at least knock down the opponent in the third round. Which Batyrgaziyev did.

In the semifinal, Albert defeated Cuban Lázaro Álvarez, whom many considered the favorite in this weight category. Albert entered the ring to Nogai music played on the dombra.

«I lost to this Cuban twice: first in 2018 at the Russia–Cuba match, and then in 2019 in the quarterfinals of the World Championship in Yekaterinburg. In the Olympic semifinal, I managed to get revenge at the most crucial moment. Moreover, I»m sure that 90% of boxing fans didn«t give me a chance in the fight with Álvarez,» the athlete admitted.

In the final, Batyrgaziyev met American Duke Ragan, the silver medalist of the 2017 World Championship. As in the fight with Álvarez, here the Yugra native needed some time to warm up. But then he got into gear: hitting hard, increasing the pace. The fight ended with a score of 3:2 in favor of the Russian boxer. Albert Batyrgaziyev became an Olympic champion.

«Father taught me never to give up. This Olympic medal—is largely his victory too,» Albert said.

After the Olympic gold, the young boxer woke up a star.

«For a while after the tournament in Tokyo, it was very unusual for me. Everywhere I was invited, and I admit, I couldn»t go everywhere. Unfortunately, I had to refuse many. Receptions and meetings were undoubtedly very pleasant, but they were exhausting.

I can say right away what I«m incredibly happy about. I managed to visit different regions and communicate with young athletes,» Batyrgaziyev said in an interview for the Russian Boxing Federation.

The courtyard of Albert«s parents» house was packed with people wanting to congratulate him. A huge line formed, many came from afar, bringing gifts. Batyrgaziyev recalls with laughter: when his father tried to go to his own home, he was told: «Wait your turn.»

Knocking Out Opponents Left and Right

After taking Olympic gold, Batyrgaziyev continued to compete in professional boxing. At the end of 2021 in Moscow, the athlete won the title by the Eurasian Boxing Parliament (EBP) version.

Over the next five years, Batyrgaziyev was only busy collecting titles, knocking out champions from different countries. For his hard fighting style and polished technique, combining strength and speed, boxing fans nicknamed Albert the Nogai Lion. However, the athlete himself admitted that he didn«t really like it. In the end, another nickname stuck—ALBA, where AL is Albert, BA is Batyrgaziyev.

In professional boxing, the Yugra native won 12 victories, 8 of them by knockout. And in total, Batyrgaziyev fought 13 matches.

Fateful Defeat

On July 2, 2025, in Istanbul, an evening of professional boxing took place, where a sports drama unfolded. The main event of the tournament was the fight between Albert Batyrgaziyev and James Dickens. The Yugra native was defending his IBA.PRO and interim WBA super featherweight titles. In the record of 27-year-old Batyrgaziyev—12 wins and no losses. 34-year-old Briton Dickens had a record of 35 wins with five losses.

For the Yugra boxer, the fight went unsuccessfully and even dangerously. Dickens unleashed a flurry of powerful blows, Albert was knocked down twice. In the fourth round, Batyrgaziyev«s corner, fearing for his health, was forced to throw in the towel, after which the referee waved off the fight. The belts that previously belonged to Albert went to the Briton»s shoulders.

This was the first defeat in Batyrgaziyev«s professional career. By that time, battles with top boxers Lamont Roach and Gervonta Davis were on the horizon, which would have led the Yugra native to world championship. But after the loss in Turkey, Batyrgaziyev will have to start his path to the top again, regaining the lost titles.

Albert himself took his defeat philosophically.

«Victories and defeats are from the Almighty. I»m sure of that. So, there was good in it for me.

The main thing is to learn the lesson, work on mistakes, and move on. And, of course, not to despair and not relax,« he commented.

Outside the Ring

Batyrgaziyev carefully guards his personal life from public attention. It is known that in March 2022, the athlete tied the knot. The wedding took place in Makhachkala in the spirit of national traditions.

Albert is a Muslim, and faith has great significance in his life. The champion often visits the mosque.

And Batyrgaziyev is a fan of hardening, sometimes even extreme. Every morning he starts with a cold shower, and during training camps, he practices bathing in a mountain river.

«It has long been known that hardening the body in cold water positively affects immunity and circulation because cold water reduces inflammation and speeds up recovery after hard training and competitions,» the athlete shares.

Where Is He Now?

After the loss in Istanbul, Batyrgaziyev went quiet, and at the end of December 2025, he announced he was taking a pause in his professional career. According to him, this decision was not easy. It was that first defeat that made Albert rethink many things.

«Since I always felt responsibility not only in the ring but also to society—now it»s time to more actively engage in projects I«ve long planned, for example, supporting the development of sports infrastructure in my home regions. This doesn»t mean I«m saying goodbye to the ring. I remain an active boxer. But now all my work is outside it,» the Olympian wrote on social media.

Experts differ on whether Batyrgaziyev will return to the professional ring. Some say he«s still too young and full of energy to end his career. Others are sure that Albert, like many athletes, tired of eternal races, will go into politics. In one of his old interviews, the Yugra native admitted that he allows for such an option.

For many years, Batyrgaziyev has indeed been engaged in public activities. He conducts open training sessions in different parts of the country, including in Nizhnevartovsk, meets with young athletes, and discusses plans for sports development with authorities.

«I»ve been in sports all my life and now want to be useful in the same field. Plans include opening my own sports school, building a gym in my home settlement, and several other projects. Need to develop comprehensively,« the champion said in an interview with the channel »Gazprom Dobycha Nadym.«

Moreover, Batyrgaziyev has his own business. The athlete opened a café in Kislovodsk, where his father moved in retirement. The establishment, with a menu based on healthy eating, was named ALBA after Batyrgaziyev«s boxing nickname.

Despite skeptical views from some sports experts, Albert gives hope to fans that they will see him in the ring again.

«I»m not saying goodbye, I«m just saying »see you later«,» the Yugra native assured.
