Burned Nyagan mosque won't be restored; new one under construction

The burned El-Bayram mosque in Nyagan will not be restored because a new one is being built in the city. Until it is operational, a temporary space for prayers will be arranged for believers, Mayor Ivan Yamashev reported.

«We are selecting a temporary premises so that Muslims can perform prayers ahead of the upcoming holidays: Ramadan will run from February 19 to March 19, and March 20 is Eid al-Fitr,» the city head said.

Recall that on the night of January 26, the roof of the El-Bayram mosque caught fire. No one was injured. The preliminary cause of the fire is faulty electrical wiring: the premises were heated by an electric boiler, which, due to severe frost, was operating at maximum capacity.

Earlier, Mayor Ivan Yamashev visited the fire site along with specialists and representatives of religious organizations. He noted that thanks to the prompt actions of fire and rescue units, most of the building was preserved.

Nevertheless, the old building will not be restored. In Nyagan, the construction of a new mosque is in the final stretch. The completion stage is about 90%. The building is being erected with donations from parishioners and concerned citizens. Yamashev noted that construction will now be accelerated to put the facility into operation soon.

Previously, we reported that in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO) in 2025, the number of children who died in fires doubled.
