U.S. President Donald Trump made several statements about the global political situation. According to him, Russia and Ukraine are already close to resolving the conflict, and the U.S. will not seize Greenland by force. Here are his key statements from the International Economic Forum in Davos.

What about the Ukrainian conflict?

Trump stated that the threat of World War III over Ukraine has been eliminated. He also added that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy want to reach a settlement agreement.

“I am interacting with President Putin, and he, I believe, wants to make a deal,” said Trump.

Moreover, he noted that the U.S. should not deal with Ukraine, as it is Europe«s business. At the same time, the American leader added that he genuinely wants to help resolve the conflict.

“They don«t appreciate what we»re doing. I«m talking about NATO, I»m talking about Europe. They should deal with Ukraine, and we should not. The U.S. is very far away, we are separated by a big beautiful ocean, we have nothing to do with this,” stated Trump.

The politician added that in Davos, he will hold a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The negotiations are scheduled for January 21.

“Drones are killing thousands of people every week. We need to stop this. Today I am going to meet with President Zelenskyy. I think now we are at a point where they are ready to get together and make a deal,” said Trump.

Furthermore, it became known that in early January, Vladimir Putin received a new draft of a peace plan for Ukraine. This was reported on January 21 by the publication Bloomberg. According to its source, the Kremlin assessed the proposal “as a significant step forward,” although a final agreement on all points is not yet in place.

To discuss the new plan with Vladimir Putin, Trump«s special envoy Steve Witkoff will fly to Moscow on January 22. For more details on the upcoming meeting, see this article.

What will happen with Greenland?

During the forum, Trump stated that the U.S. will not use force to obtain Greenland. He added that America wants to acquire the island to create the “Golden Dome” missile defense system and deter “dangerous adversaries.”

“We want a piece of ice for our own protection. You can say «yes» or «no,» and we will remember,” noted the politician.

According to him, the U.S. is the only country that can ensure Greenland«s security. Trump emphasized that he wants to quickly move to negotiations on purchasing the island.

“We saved Greenland during World War II. Denmark fell to Germany after just six hours of fighting and proved completely incapable of defending either itself or Greenland. We deemed it our duty to deploy our own forces to hold Greenland«s territory and ensure its security,” he said.

Recall that in January, Donald Trump stated that he intends to annex Greenland to the U.S. for national security purposes. The politician demanded that Denmark leave the island, which is part of the Danish Kingdom.

Also, the U.S. president promised that from February 1, 2026, he would impose customs duties on goods from eight European countries to push them to sell Greenland.

On the island itself, preparations have begun for a possible U.S. military invasion. The Prime Minister of Denmark stated that the kingdom will not give up Greenland.
