A complaint against the sentence of politician Alan Marzaev has been filed with the Supreme Court of Bashkortostan. The case has been assigned to a judge, but the hearing date has not yet been set.

Recall that in Ufa, he was sentenced to 13 years in a strict-regime prison and fined half a billion rubles (approximately $5 million at current rates). Simultaneously, in Moscow, another trial is underway where relatives of the former vice-premier of the republic are defendants — in this case, the prosecution is seeking to seize assets worth 100 million rubles (approximately $1 million) from the official«s family.

Alan Marzaev was detained at the end of September 2024. According to the prosecution, the deputy head of the regional government, through extortion, received 37 million rubles (approximately $370,000) from a road construction firm (10% from each of six contracts with «Dortransstroy»), in return promising patronage and assistance in concluding contracts. In case of refusal, the defendant allegedly threatened the private company with problems in future work. The prosecution points to the late former transport minister of Bashkortostan, Alexander Klebanov, who could have been an intermediary in the corruption scheme — he also testified against the vice-premier.

All publications on the Marzaev case have been collected in this story.
