Grocery Thefts Surge in Tyumen

In winter, the number of thefts from grocery stores in Tyumen increased severalfold, according to multiple sources. They say there can be 15–20 or even more police calls to hypermarkets per day. People steal food and alcohol.
“Why the rise in store thefts is being observed is still unclear — but possibly the reason is the rise in prices of food and other goods. And thieves could have just become more active. In some places, thefts have tripled,” an insider explained.
According to a second source, people of all ages are caught stealing. They steal what sells well.
“That includes cheeses, oils, coffee, chocolate, and personal care products — shampoos, deodorants. They also take alcohol. Some steal from stores for resale, others for themselves,” he said.
We contacted the authorities for an official comment on the situation.
“Every report is handled. Store thefts occur daily. As a rule, those involved in such incidents are identified and held accountable,” the Tyumen city police press service said.
In Tyumen, grocery prices changed before the New Year. In early December, we checked prices for various items at several stores. Later, on the eve of the main winter holiday, we compared the price tags. A few days ago, we wrote that cucumbers are getting more expensive in the Tyumen region. Local residents have noticed this, and data from Tyumenstat (the regional statistics service) confirms their observations.
