Houseplants, even if they are very undemanding, require proper care. If basic rules are violated, even a cactus can die, which often happens with novice gardeners. The specialist explained why some people can«t keep anything alive.

Incorrect watering and pot

The main mistake in caring for any plant is not following the watering schedule.

«Either we overwater or let it dry out, and the plant dies. It»s worth loosening the soil after each watering to make it easier to control moisture. When repotting, don«t forget about drainage in the pot,» advises Tatyana Chernova, a practicing landscape designer.

Each plant has its own cultivation rules — what kind of pot and soil are needed.

«If we repot a flower into a pot that is much larger than needed, the plant won»t develop foliage until it grows its root system. It might even die,« warned the specialist.

Care after purchase

Upon bringing a plant home, speak to it kindly to reassure it of its new environment; plants are alive and react positively to gentle words.

«When repotting, be sure to check if there»s any film at the bottom that will prevent roots from growing. Stores nowadays don«t pay much attention to this. If you want to check the condition of the roots, you shouldn»t just tear apart the peat, but carefully clean it. The roots should be light, not black,« explained Tatyana Chernova.

To fully assess the root system, place the plant in water for 3–4 hours. You can add a root stimulator.

Drainage and soil

It«s better to pour a layer of expanded clay or pebbles at the bottom of the pot. Without drainage, the plant will rot quickly. The soil should be nutritious.

«With one hand, hold the plant by the stem at the desired height, not by the root. Add soil and shake the pot, and it will settle well, then gently compact it,» advises the specialist.

If the roots are black, it«s worth either trimming them or getting another plant.
