Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by the larvae of tapeworms. The parasite forms cystic masses in the liver, lungs, brain, and bones, the office reported.

Domestic animals, especially dogs, are often carriers of echinococcosis. Infection occurs less commonly from cats and foxes. At-risk groups include rural residents, hunters, fishermen, farm workers, and veterinary station employees. People living in unsanitary conditions also have an increased chance of infection.

«People are at increased risk if they regularly come into contact with animals, have poor hand hygiene, and consume undercooked meat and fish,» added Rospotrebnadzor.

To avoid echinococcosis, one should regularly wash hands with soap, examine domestic animals, and administer anti-parasitic drugs to them. Rospotrebnadzor also recommends not neglecting the heat treatment of meat and fish. Those engaged in agriculture should wear gloves and closed clothing while working.

Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor explained how to avoid intestinal infections.
