The historical sports drama «Golden Double,» directed by Mger Mkrtchyan, will start screening in theaters from January 29. The film tells the story of legendary footballer and coach Nikita Simonyan.
In 1973, Simonyan took over Yerevan«s Ararat and immediately set the team what seemed like an impossible task: to achieve the »golden double« by winning both the USSR Championship and the USSR Cup simultaneously. However, the new coach faced resistance from the players.
The role of Nikita Simonyan is played by Yegor Beroev, known from the series «Turkish Gambit.» His wife Lyudmila is portrayed by Ksenia Alferova («Kapkan»). The film also features Sofya Doniyants, Sergey Shakurov, Sergey Gazarov, and other actors.
To ensure authenticity, the film«s creators consulted with Nikita Simonyan himself. In an interview, he said: »I was sincerely surprised when they proposed the idea for this film because a very long time has passed: 50 years is a huge period. The only thing I would wish for is truthfulness, so that people truly learn this story. The goal was very ambitious and a bit cheeky. But we managed thanks to great effort and faith in victory.«
Filming took place in Armenia and Russia. To recreate the Razdan Stadium and the streets of Yerevan from the 1970s, extensive sets and computer graphics were used. Over 700 actors were involved in the filming, and professional players were brought in for the football match scenes.
The film is approved for viewers aged 16 and over.
